Overview

By mid-November, the gates of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Tungnath, Rudranath, and Kalpeshwar temples are closed. The gates of Badrinath and Madmaheshwar are open only. To reach the Madmaheshwar temple, one has to go through the way of Ukhimath Rudraprayag. The main road leads directly to the market, which is the basis of the journey of Madmaheshwar and it’s about 23 kilometers from Uniyana which is measured on foot. A few years ago, trekkers used to go through the Manasuna which is located in between of Ukhimath and Uniyana. The travelers used to reach Mansuna from Uniyana on foot. Now the road is made by the government till the Uniyana and it will go ahead too in the future.

The Madmaheshwar is one of Lord Shiva’s Panch Kedar temples. Among the Panch Kedar, various parts of Lord Shiva are worshiped. According to the Shiva Purana, after the Mahabharata war, the Pandavas were distressed by the killing guru (Guru Hatya), the murder of tribe (Gotra Hatya), and the murder of their brothers. To know the remedy for its atonement, they went to Shri Krishna and he directed them to meet Vedvyas Ji. The creator of all Vedas, Vedvyas Ji told them to go to the Kailash Parvat and perform the penance of Lord Shiva so that they can get rid of their sins. After wasting a long time while traveling to the Himalayas, they came to one place and worshiped Lord Shiva for a few days.
