Overview

Nachiketa Tal is located on an altitude of 2455 meters high above sea level to in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. Natural trenches are the only source of water for the lake, which is managed by the leafless trees that stand strong in the same fashion, No shrubs touch them but they stand tall and looks like the trees stand as the witness to the event. It is believed that Nachiketa the son of Brahmin Vajashrava, waited at the lake for God of Death which is famously called as Nachiketa Taal. The trek started from Chaurangikha which is a base camp and followed by a mild trek to Nachiketa Tal which is 4 Km one way.

In a famous tale of Katha Upanishad around 5th century BCE, there was Brahmin Vajashrava who conducts a Yagna the Vedic sacrifice(SARVA DAKSHINA), along with his son Nachiketa who was 16 years old. At the end of the Yagna, Nachiketa’s father decided to donate everything as a part of SARVA DAKSHINA which include his wealth including his herd of cows to the priest and the Monks who assembled there, but he got the last moment greed and kept all the healthy cattle for himself and donated old and infirm cattle to the priest. Looking at this his son object and asked his father, to whom would he like to gift his son, who was also one of his possessions, Nachiketa’s father became angry, upon asking him again and again, out of sheer exasperation he shouted I hereby gift you to Yama, the Lord of death.

Haridwar / Dehradun to Uttarkashi (195 Km/140 Km Drive)

Arrival in Uttarkashi, check in to hotel engrave as per TrekNTale team. Evening visit to famous Kashi Vishwanath and Shakti Temple. Kashi Vishwanath Temple is ancient Lord Shiva temple and Shakti temple is dedicated to Goddess Parvati in the same premises. In a famous tale, it is said that the temple has been made by sage Parshuram to worship Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva chooses this abode for an era of Kaliyuga as it is believed that Kashi which is called the abode of Lord Shiva which he first chooses in Varanasi will be submerged in water so he chose the northern part near to Himalaya. Therefore it is also called Kashi of north and the city famously known as Uttar kasha where Uttar refer in Sanskrit as North and Kashi as the abode of Shiva. After visiting the temple one can visit Manikarni ghat. The city has a resemblance of Varanasi and names of ghat and temples are quite similar.

Day 2: Uttarkashi to Nachiketa Tal (30 Km drive + 4 Km Trek)

After breakfast, you will be driven to Chaurangikhal which is 22 Km from Uttarkashi city. The trekking will encompass passing the rhododendron trees, dense with pine cedar and oak tree. The mild trail is full of the scenic view of the Himalayan peaks and from midway, you can start catching the glimpse of Bandarpunch peak. Packed lunch will be served at the Nachiketa Tal. You can relax at the side of the lake as the lake is a lonely and slightly spooky place. On the corner of the lake, you will find an old sadhu baba who stay solitarily in his hermit. The lake is full of Himalayan fish surrounded by lush acres of greenery and is a perfect destination of beginner level of trekker and nature lover.

Day 3: Nachiketa Tal to Uttarkashi (4 Km Trek + 30 Km drive) to Harshil (75 Km Drive)

After breakfast drive along the banks of the Bhagirathi River for Harsil, this small village is an excellent mountain resort and unexplored, the beautiful valley is tucked away with green valleys, this dense sleepy meadow is located at an altitude of 7,860 feet from the sea level and just 25 km away from holy shrine of Gangotri one of the famous temple of Char Dham sector of Uttrakhand. This small hamlet is a marvelous located amidst dense deodar trees and in winter the trees and the Himalayan peaks are all snow covered and bright sunny day with clear blue sky makes the picture perfect.

There's a famous tale that goes around British officer Wilson and there is a house named "Wilson House" in Harsil. It is said that Wilson married a local pahadi girl and settled at this serene village. For his earning he discovered the unique idea of selling Deodar(Cedar) tree by floating them on the Bhagirathi river to the plains which reduce the cost of transportation and this way he minted the huge money to ruled over this place. Wilson house was restored to a Forest Rest House.

The locality is majorly populated by the Bhotia tribe (basically from Tibet) and can be a perfect place of cultural exchange while seeing women weaving and knitting, taking care of the household, kids, and cattle, while men playing cards and smoking in a lazy day. One can have leisure time watching birds chirping sound or can spend time in adventurous activities or delve into practicing yoga and meditation on the banks of the holy Bhagirathi River. Day 4: Harshil to Haridwar / Dehradun (265Km/216 Km Drive)

If you are staying at Harsil then you will be offered early morning breakfast to be dropped at the Dehradun Airport/Haridwar Railway Station, if the stay is at Uttarkashi then after a lazy breakfast drive back to Dehradun Airport/Haridwar Railway Station.
