Gomukh (Cow Mouth) glacier located at the height of 13,200 ft (4,023 m) is one of the favorite haunts for trekkers all across the globe. The trek is not only popular because it’s one of the oldest trekking routes but also considered as one of the holiest places in Hinduism because of the origin of most sacred river Ganges from then snout of Gangotri glacier which is said to look like mouth of cow and in Sanskrit ‘Gou’ means cow and Mukh means mouth and that is the reason it’s called “Gomukh or Gaumukh” and Ganga, the sacred river which emerges from Gomukh is located at Bhagirathi glacier and has many epic, mythological significance and the traces which are mentioned in the tales of the Sanskrit epics, Puranas, Ramayana and the greatest epic Mahabharatha.

It is said that Ganga was the river of Heaven and has to emerge on earth to wash the sin of 60,000 sons of King Sagar which has been cursed by the sage Kapila. King Sagar which has 60,000 sons performed a Yagna, which is called as Ashwamedha for a great horse sacrifice to be believed as whoever performs this yagya will be very powerful. When Indra, the king of Gods came to this news he became so afraid that he will lose his position and stole the horse and cheatingly tied the horse into Sage Kapila’s ashram.
