Nachiketa with Pure heart and abundance of faith cheerfully took his father at his word and went straight to Yamaloka, the abode of death. Yama was not in Yamaloka when Nachiketa went there, and he came after three days seeing that Nachiketa was waiting and fasting for 3 days, Yamaraj was so impressed with the dedication of this poor Brahmin boy who has innocently waited just to keep his father verdict. Yamraj convinced innocent Brahmin boy that his father was in a simply anger and hasty gift is not a gift at all, besides he is the only son and his father must be very much worried by now and advised him to go back to his father as he still has a lot of years left to live on the earth. Yamraj also offers him to grant three boons as he was waiting without food and water before his palace for three full days.
Nachiketa then asked the three boons, the first boon he asked from Yama was – To bring peace and joy into his father’s heart and may he become free of anxiety toward me and may he talk to me when I am liberated by Yama. Yama granted the first boon. The second boon, Nachiketa wanted to know how to perform fire sacrifices that lead to heaven – Does it free one’s ancestors? Yama was so pleased with the query as it was not his personal query but was for the society and explained the fire sacrifices which is thrice performed when the person respects his parents, teachers, and discharged the three duties of studying the scriptures in his lifetime, performing all human ritual and service to those in need. He concluded that one who performs all this liberate above from the complication of birth and death and also blessed him that whoever will perform this fire sacrifice will lead to heaven and will be known by Nachiketa’s name. Third boon Nachiketa questioned pertaining to Moksha( Libration) rejecting the Kama asking what happens to the soul when it reaches its final death.
Nachiketa says, the Death of personality when nothing exists and all is void thus, Nachiketa said bless me with the knowledge as my third boon. Yama asked Nachiketa for some other boon instead of this last one, Yama asked to ask for all kinds of riches, and long life, however, Nachiketa refused, he asked Yama to entertain the third “Purusharth” namely desire or the Kama and withstood the temptation offered to him, Nachiketa was persistent, he said Yama gratify me of the knowledge about, people entertained doubt in the context of the next world and whose knowledge leads to a greater result, he wanted to know, what happens to the soul in the last stage, Yama then started giving me answers to the indestructible Atma or Soul.
The secret of death is hard to know and even a mystery for the God, although Yama tried to escape replying for the third boon which he already blessed him, Nachiketa was rigid and finally, God of death agreed to resolve his doubts and points out the delusion of ignorant men. Yama says that the human is ignorant and considering themselves intelligent and enlightened, senseless people going round and round following cooked courses, which is like, blindly led by the blind. The means of attainment of the other world is not disclosed to the non-discriminating man who blunders being befooled by the lure of wealth, that one constantly thinks that this is the only world and none hereafter comes under his sway, again and again. Yama also explains how difficult it is to understand self or Atma by an inferior man.
Yama explains, the self is certainly not adequately known when spoken by an inferior person, as it is thought of in various different ways, after one is identified with it there is no further action on the same.
The self is beyond augmentation being subtle than the atomic quantity. An intelligent man gives happiness and sorrow by developing a meditative mind on the self that is Adhyatma Yoga contemplates on the ancient efforts, which is unfathomably located in the intellect and is sitting in our heart, Yama says “AUM” is the symbol of Brahma. Yama said I will tell you the one voice that all the Vedas propound which all the austerities speak of and wishing for which people practice Bharamcharya It is namely “AUM”.
The self that is slyer than the sly and grander than the grand is sojourned in the heart of every creature. A desireless man sees the glory of the self through the serenity of the organs and thereby he becomes free from sorrow. Just as the Sun is the eye of the whole world has its own defects similarly all are not tainted by the same sorrows of the world being transcendental, Yama thus enlightened Nachiketa.
